I just love it when I can come back here and talk to all of my friends like nothing happened during the last 2 1/2 months. I love when I can talk to them and find out about their lives and they can find out about mine. Within the last few days I have found out that, contrary to what I believed, my friends are still there for me. They will always (at least I hope haha) be there for me, and lend an ear when I need to vent or speak of something. I truly love both my NU and my FHS friends dearly, and love when I get to spend time with them. Because, no matter where I go, or end up, I know that I can always count on them to be there. There has been one person who has helped me so much, and I don't think he realizes it. He helps me immensely when I can talk to him, knowing he'll hold his comments, and answer honestly and without question. That's been how all my friends are, but this one in particular is pretty darn special. So, Thank You for everything you've done, and I'm sorry that I've ever doubted anyone. There, that is all,
xx.

NEW STORY: Entertainment Venues and the Recession
THE FOLLOWING IS A STORY I WROTE FOR MY FINAL JOURNALISM PROJECT. COMMENT PLZ.
Evanston SPACE picked a bad time to enter the concert venue business.
But despite starting up in a recession, general manager Jake Samuels says the Chicago Avenue venue has done well, buoyed by the artsy Chicago North Shore residents.
“We’re a new venue; we’re only a year and a half old, so we don’t have the history that some other venues have,” Samuels says. “For us, our business is steadily increasing, but we’re still working hard to get our name out.”
At first glance, the American concert industry is doing well. Since 2002, North American ticket grosses have increased $1.1 million.
“Regardless of the rest of the economy, costs are high. Those things add up,” Samuels said. “I think there’s an element of escapist entertainment. People don’t tend to stop going out and indulging themselves, in tough times. It’s certainly a nice distraction and we see a lot of people enjoying themselves.”
But while grosses have increased, it’s mostly due to a rise in ticket prices, and not an increase in attendance. The average ticket price has increased $3 to $159 in 2008, according to a report from Stub Hub. Still, ticket prices took a nosedive in 2006.
Communication junior Marcus Shepard has been going to concerts since the seventh grade, and even has a management deal. Shepard says that artists should do more to take care of their fans.
“I think artists should think about [their] fans and I believe many have,” Shepard says. “At the end of the day, though, concerts are about making money, and with the current state of the recording industry, the only aspect that these artists are making money from are their tours.”
Much like SPACE, Chicago theatres, while struggling with subscription numbers, have seen their ticket sales trend upward. Still, officials at most theatres remain cautious in their outlooks for the weeks ahead.
“Our single ticket sales have been fine,” Steppenwolf Theatre Company marketing director John Zinn says. “It depends show to show. We’re doing okay. The financial model [is what] people are looking at more.”
In Steppenwolf’s case, subscription numbers, and in particular, new subscriptions are down.
The success in staying competitive has not only been confined to larger theatres like Steppenwolf, who rely mainly on large, touring productions.
“We had a show at the end of last year that was a big hit,” Next Theatre Company marketing director Chelsea Keenan says. “There is more difficulty bringing in buyers; they’re more careful. Funding is a huge part of our revenue base.”
Next Theatre Company received money from the Recovery Act, but Keenan still says a concerted effort has been made in regards to current marketing trends. She says that theatres have their work cut out for them, owing to the fact that it is much easier for consumers to get information themselves.
“Marketing has changed to be more targeted,” Keenan says. “Consumers are more specific.”
Keenan bills the theatre company as “thoughtful and intellectually provocative,” and so far, the venue has had a decent year, albeit slow.
“Our numbers are down,” Keenan says. “[But] we’re only two of five performances into the year. It’s very common for us to see single tickets and subscription goals met by the end of the year. I’m not concerned about it.”
But because the recession took hold after some of the best years in the economy’s history, expectations are tough to match.
“We had a banner year the year before the recession,” Northlight Theatre marketing director Chad Peterson says. “So that year looks more like an anomaly. In 2008-2009, subscription sales came down but stayed above our five year average. This year we’re trending up.”
But Peterson says he is concerned by a particular attitude shift that has taken shape in the midst of the recession.
“People are [now] far less willing to take something on trust. [They almost want] a guarantee,” he says. “I think what we’ve seen is [that] a lot more shows have to be ‘the’ hot show. I certainly hope it’s temporary. I hope people are willing to take risks.”
On the other hand, theatres that rent out space rather than produce shows are doing just as well. Theatre Building Chicago says that business is booming.
“Our rentals are for space,” TBC marketing director Jeff DeLong says. “We rent theatres to clients. Our attendance has been very good; rentals are at about 97 percent, but there has been a slight dip. We are still an affordable entertainment option.”
TBC’s marketing procedures have changed, and shifted to more low-cost options.
“We have definitely increased our social networking presence,” DeLong says. “[For example] we’re twittering about what’s going on; [these are] low to no-cost advertising options."
But Shepard, like most people, says he ultimately doesn’t concern himself too much with the price.
“I only attend concerts that I know the artists I am going to see are going to put on a show. Whether it is an artistic show such as Beyonce, or a vocal showcase such as Ledisi and Jill Scott, at the end of the day, I pay to hear good singing and have a good time.”

It's closer to Thanksgiving!
I actually found someone to help me put on the Christma- sorry, non-denominational tree up yesterday... now it has lights and is all cool and stuff! But, seriously, our tree looks gorgeous outside the dorm, and now the weather gods have spoken... they are tired of warm temperatures! I am getting excited about the upcoming holiday! I finally get to go home, and see how it has changed without me (although in all seriousness, it probably hasn't)... and I get to stand in line at Target and just hope that it is not too cold, otherwise my peacoat won't work that well.
Yesterday, our dorm exec board (the head honchos) decided that the dorm needed a Twitter! And, me being the budding socialite I am, I volunteered to run it! check it out at twitter.com/jonesnu, as well as mine at twitter.com/troyquezada. These two accounts belong to two fine specimens! Please also support Kara Ali, who is a budding singer-songwriter... buy her song off iTunes; it's only 99 cents! That's cheaper than pretty much anything out there nowadays! And it supports her and her cause, so ya'll need to get on the bandwagon and buy it! http://bit.ly/3vzvtH ...
I've always wondered how many people actually read my blog. Oh... and I can assure everybody out there that I'm real! I'm not a PR plant, lol, I'm actually a real guy, with real needs.. like watching Lady GaGa over and over again... and planning his Facebook response for some girl who insists on continuing to slander his friend. :D xx

UPDATE!
I will not even take the time to detail all that I've done in the past couple of months. It's been incredibly busy, but an incredibly rewarding time, both personally and professionally. The teachers are simply put, amazing, and truly care about their kids (well, some of them lol), and the wealth of activities available to you is tremendous. Should I do student theater, or should I do the broadcast network? Should I go to hot cookie bar, or should I go get some real food? So many questions! It's just a quick update, and I promise I will update soon! Gah!
Troy is a very busy freshman, who doesn't know what he wants to do with his life... He also doesn't appreciate when people slander his best friend on Facebook. :) And he is currently obsessed with Lady GaGa.

The calm before the storm
Over the last few days, I have been busily preparing for the adventure that lies before me. Being here so long, I never actually imagined that I would be off to college, just like everyone else! All my friends left a long time ago, and since then, I have been watching way too much That 70s Show, Dorm Life, and I actually think my productivity jumped off a cliff. Aside from doing the crapload of summer work that the school assigned us, I have been eagerly prepping for the big move; I can't count how many times I looked up "Willis Tower" or "El," or how many times I've looked at the Sears (willis) Tower camera, seeing whether the day was foggy, cloudy, or sunny in Chicago (mostly foggy and cloudy:)). But, now it's my turn, and I am so excited to finally get going! It's going to be amazing (I hope), and what's even more amazing is that I was able to get all my winter clothes in one big luggage; I even shrunk my total repertoire to one big luggage and one small one! Earlier this week, I shipped most of my worldly possessions that are of extreme importance to me: Comforter, lamp, shower caddy and all the seasons of That 70s Show. So, after spending a cool 100 bucks, they were off, and they got there without incident, so hopefully Tuesday I can go pick them up and make my room my new home! So, next week, you will probably see me at the beach sometime during the week, or admiring the absolutely beautiful weather; Or, I'll probably be trying to figure out how the hec my closet is going to fit my clothes; maybe those "As Seen on TV" hanger thingys I bought at Bed Bath and Beyond will help. Till later. X

Laying off the blogging
Well, for those who follow this blog, you know that I've definitely been laying off it and placing videos instead, labeling them Videos of the Day. Well, they are videos of the day! They're videos that I've found and really enjoyed, and in some cases, like in Lady Gaga's case, they make me rethink the artist. I am extremely busy right now, trying to purge my luggage of everything summer clothing, and saying some "see you laters" here and there. I will use this blog to update on the college status and continue my hilarities... Till then, see you!
P.S. My new two favorite show: Glee and Dorm Life! I will indeed keep watching them in my puny dorm room :)

I have new respect for Lady Gaga after seeing this video! Support her :) New blog post soon...

Hi America!
Okay, I am now alright. Everything is good; I am prepping for college! All that's left is to figure out how to fit my life into the box that I will call my room. Ultimate character development right there: two guys into a room that is smaller than a hotel bathroom (well not really). So, I just caught this show that I absolutely must tell you about. It's called Dorm Life, and its a documentary following seven college students at the dorm 5 South (pretty soon, you'll get the joke). Check it out on Hulu; I took the liberty of posting the first episode for ya! Please, it's so hilarious and if this is any indication how my college life will be; then I am in for a treat! Go Jones!

1 of 2 Down
Why don't college guidebooks ever tell you how hard it is to say goodbye? All they tell you is that you can be whatever you want, especially on sun splashed quads or grassy spaces. It is truly difficult to say bye, but you can console yourself, especially by watching That 70s Show! I don't know what I'm going to do with myself the next couple of weeks, but I know that I'll be watching a lot of That 70s Show; why? It makes me laugh, and it takes my mind off things. I'm currently packing, somehow figuring out how to fit my life in two suitcases (that's my limit cause Southwest charges for the third checked bag). Let me tell you, space bags are awesome! Let me put it this way; my clothes went on a diet :). Now, on the second goodbye; the first came today and it was pretty tough; but, like I said yesterday we must know that we will meet again, courtesy of ol' St. Nick. So let's prepare ourselves for what's to come; let's not be nervous; let's be ready!
And, for the record, I now have two more celebrity replies to add to my list (the first was Glee's Amber Riley); The first is Syesha Mercado (thanks for the follow, as well!) and the second is Jessica Sanchez, look her up on You Tube.

The time has come.
Well, the past few days have been a flurry of emotions. Should I be sad? Should I be happy? Should I be excited that I can finally go to a Kelly Clarkson concert? Should I be packing (for the record, I am)? Why do you let yourself get so close to people, if you know that eventually you will say goodbye (or see you later)? On the one hand, I am sad about losing my two favorite people in the whole world; On the other, I am happy to be finally going to NU, especially after all I've heard about on Facebook's Jones's Group. I am nervous about starting a new life, but I am also anxious to meet my roommate face to face and stare across the lake on an early morning, especially in the winter. In the end, I must stay positive. I am comforted by the fact that I will see these people in a few months; and hopefully on another trip in two summers. And, I know that we will stay in touch; there's too much at stake not to stay in touch. So in the end, I prepare for tomorrow; In the end, I promise not to be too sad; but above all, I promise to always be thankful for what you have given me. Thanks.

The Mystery of Celebs on Twitter
I use Twitter fairly often. And every so often I get replies; not nearly as often as I'd like, but I try. And I try to respond to every single one of them (who I am kidding? I have too much time NOT to respond to them). I've always wondered, though: How do celebrities get away with having so many followers, yet respond to only a few replies? For your information, by replying to people, you don't magically give them a gateway to begin finding out more about you. So in other words, if I reply to someone, that doesn't make them any more likely to find out more about me; they can't find out exactly where I am or what I'm doing at the moment, simply by me responding to them. There are a select few celebrities that do respond to people, but most only respond to their "own kind." There's like a secret Twitter celebrities club. Only do people who are in this club have the privilege of being replied and replying to celebrities. Hmmm, how do I get into this club?
Troy spends most of his time replying to celebrities, hoping that they respond back to them. For the record, only Amber Riley of Glee has ever responded to me.

An Incredibly Busy Few Days
Wow, since I've last checked in, there have been a lot of stuff that has been happening. I'll just make it quick, though, cause I'm trying to reset my sleep schedule lol... Got to get ready to see guns outside of my window (Jones inside joke apparently), and that might not let me sleep. Got my tuition bill, and let me just say this: I only wish I could get a car that's worth as much as my education... Oh, but I have been trying to go on a "lifestyle change" (read: diet) and so far, it's going pretty well, but you know those freshman 15 everyone tells you about? Yeah, they start with goodbye dinners at Ventana's and Ardovinos... Not that I don't absolutely love those restaurants... I just won't eat breakfast/dinner those days... There! Solved it... And I must say, it is getting closer to that time, when everyone will leave me and I will press "restart" on that DVD player (not literally)... Well, not literally restart, but let's just say play. Let me just say this (courtesy of @syesha on Twitter): Focus on the present and let the past stay where it belongs. It's tough, but it is necessary and I only know that we will all meet up somewhere! Where, I don't know. We'll see. We shall see.

A Twitter Outage! Worst Day of My Life!
I had two surprises this morning... The first: we had to reschedule breakfast, the second? I log onto my Twitter and it doesn't let me log on... I was like, you're playing me, right? No, they weren't.. They genuinely were having a denial of service attack. This threw me all over the place, when I couldn't find out that Paula has the best fans in the world (according to her), or that Cory Monteith (Glee) was playing word games to get ready for the Television Critics Association (and for the record, a normal person doesn't know what TCA is; please explain. Oh wait, we only have 140 characters :(... Thankfully after a boring, boring, boring day yesterday, today was so MUCH better (and I realized that driving in a 57 Chevy, emblazoned with Cowboy colors, may actually be good for the rep); Let's try it out... And if any AI execs are reading (they aren't), AI should hire Ann Wilson for the new judge! Just try it out. And, finally, last night, I saw a quote on Facebook that absolutely made my day... So, Miriam, if you're reading, thanks for making my evening! The quote is below:
"Given that NU is already raping me out of all the money all of my family members and I have earned or will ever earn, I had to go cheap with my laptop."

The Best Two Days Ever!
Wow, since my last post so many things have happened. I actually made time in my EXTREMELY BUSY (sarcasm intended) schedule to hang out w/ some friends for breakfast, dinner, and everything in between (there's a reason why I haven't lost weight)! Tks Sabrina and Steph and Alex for those great times! We discussed some great things too.. Including why we want to become famous, what we want to become famous for, and how we want to be in Rome when the paparazzi suddenly attack us... Don't worry Sabrina! I will protect you... But, really, I got my housing assignment (finally)!!! I must say (as I have said before on Twitter, Facebook, and such) that I am extremely pleased with my housing situation... Thanks goodness for NU housing lol.. And I have gotten so many facebook requests in the past few days than I have gotten in my entire time at high school! You know you've made it in the world when you have more than 100 facebook friends! Looking forward to Jones... I also got the Campus Manager job from EF College Break! Now comes the hard part, convincing college age kids that they should spend their hard earned (yeah right) money to a trip... maybe I should tell them that the drinking laws in Europe are more lax.. I guess I'll tell that when I go present to a frat/sorority... But in all seriousness, please travel with EFCB! They are a great company with wonderful tours and I cannot wait to go on my second Europe tour! Check out our Facebook page.... look on my groups I'm apart of! It's the Northwestern EF College Break one... Tks! I also spent five minutes of my life ordering satellite for my TV-depraved dad, so that he can have it promptly Thursday morning... Let's see what else? Oh goodness, it's getting late, I must put some more stuff in my blog tomorrow... Oh, but wait, what the hec is Say Now? I looked it up...

The Most Awkward Scholarship Luncheon EVER!
Let me first say that I sincerely appreciate LULAC'S generosity... They gave me a scholarship today during their annual (apparently meaning twice a year) banquet. And the problem didn't lie with me. I ended up taking my dad to the banquet, because my mom didn't have time to take a shower (instead distracted by multiple events, like ironing clothes and keeping my brother in line). Well my dad is Republican; the organization is LULAC. Enough said. Multiple awkward moments: when we first said Hi (and that was about it), when the keynote speaker announced that he moved to the US to go to college (and said to never forget your country, problem was "country" was left ambigious), and when my dad started talking about personal responsibility. First, my dad consistently says that people must thank the US for their success (as well as mom, dad, abuela etc...), so imagine his surprise when "country" was ambiguous. Then the president of my council shut him up, right when he was talking about US benefits. Hmm... Regardless, I enjoyed the luncheon, primarily because it was free food, and a nice little diversion (a three hour one). So thanks LULAC, and keep pissing off my dad! Trust me, I enjoy it :).

Hmmm... Should I get a blog?
Okay, really, am I this important? Do I really need to let people know what I'm thinking on a day-to-day basis? Trust me, it's not that interesting. But, it is going to get interesting! Alongside my Twitter (Troyquezada) I am going to be famous one day and people are actually going to follow me! Yes... But anyways, did those college brochures ever tell you, in addition to the fit, multicultural, and teeth-bleached students, that college is actually REALLY HARD? Yeah, it is, in between loans, friends, and planning Harry Potter exhibit days. Oh, but one day we all hope that we're going to be the next J.Lo or Ryan Seacrest (oh wait, those are my dreams, of course talking about J.Lo's success not sex), and we actually hope that instead of IHOP all the time, we can eat at a nice restaurant without having to transfer money... Or that we can buy two pairs of jeans at Aeropostale so that we can get two free. Well, I'm on the way; I LOVE journalism, especially when you get to ask Rick Perry if the US should worry about the drug war, and being told by him, surrounded by armed federal agents, that his being here is a testament to how safe the country is. Hmm... I don't get armed federal agents... But anyways, lately I have begun to discover (in addition to being horribly overweight) that I also LOVE media... But, I guess those Medill advisors are going to have to sift things out with me... And before I leave, if anyone on Twitter is watching this, please know that when I reply to your posts, I'm not stalking you, I am genuinely interested in how you're doing! So, thanks Amber Riley, for not freaking out... That's the beauty of Twitter... No one knows who the hell who are...
